AAP Workers Detained During Election Commission Protest
Police detained over 25 AAP workers, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, at an India Gate protest against the CEC.
More than 25 Aam Aadmi Party workers were detained during a protest at India Gate demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Among those detained were Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj and MLA Sanjeev Jha. The protesters accused the Election Commission of irregularities connected to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, while police said the demonstration violated restrictions on gatherings in the area.
The detention forms part of a broader series of demonstrations that have occurred in Delhi following controversy over voter-roll revision. Opposition parties have increasingly used public protests to challenge the Election Commission, arguing that the revision could exclude legitimate voters. The Commission and the BJP have rejected those accusations and defended the process as necessary to maintain accurate electoral rolls.
The repeated clashes between protesters and police raise a separate question about how democratic dissent should be managed in the capital. Governments have a responsibility to maintain public order and protect public spaces, but political parties also have constitutional rights to assemble and express opposition. The dispute is likely to continue as opposition groups plan additional demonstrations. The more prolonged the confrontation becomes, the more important it will be for authorities to distinguish between genuine public-order risks and peaceful political mobilisation.
