Air pollution increased significantly in dozens of cities after U.S. embassies and consulates stopped publishing independent air-quality measurements, according to a new study examining the consequences of the monitoring programme's termination. The study found that pollution indicators rose between 24% and 33% in 46 cities after the United States ended the programme, which had previously provided publicly available measurements from more than 80 diplomatic locations. The research used satellite observations to estimate aerosol levels around cities where monitoring ended and found a significant deterioration after the data stopped being published. The findings do not establish that ending the monitoring programme itself caused emissions to increase in every location, and researchers cautioned that local conditions could have contributed to the changes. Without transparent data, governments and citizens may have a much weaker understanding of the scale and trajectory of pollution.
