During the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea, the ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath was officially inscribed onto the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. Located near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath holds immense historical and spiritual importance as the location where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon, initiating the "Turning of the Wheel of Dharma". The protected heritage zone encompasses iconic archeological structures, including the grand Dhamek Stupa, the Chaukhandi Stupa, and the historic Ashokan Pillar, whose lion capital serves as India's national emblem. The UNESCO designation will bring increased international preservation funding and global tourism, cementing the location's status as a premier center for historical research.
