Bhadohi Gets New Official Name
Yogi Adityanath announced that Bhadohi district will now be called Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that Bhadohi district would now be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. The announcement was made during a programme where projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore were inaugurated or launched. The renaming adds another chapter to a broader pattern of place-name changes in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India, where governments have sought to replace or modify historical names for cultural, political or identity-related reasons.
Supporters of renaming often argue that public places should reflect local cultural history and honour figures associated with the region. Critics, however, argue that repeated name changes can consume administrative resources and become politically symbolic exercises rather than addressing more immediate development needs. The debate is particularly complex in India because place names can carry layers of linguistic, religious, colonial and regional history.
In Bhadohi’s case, the reference to Sant Ravidas connects the district’s identity to one of North India’s most influential Bhakti-era figures. The government’s decision will require administrative changes to official documents, signage, maps and government records. Such changes can take time because both the old and new names may continue to circulate among residents. The development therefore has both symbolic and practical consequences. Whether residents broadly adopt the new name will ultimately depend on how it becomes embedded in everyday administrative and social usage.
