Delhi Moves to Real-Time Pollution Monitoring With AI
Delhi launched an AI-backed control centre to track pollution sources in real time before winter.
The Delhi government has launched a control centre designed to monitor pollution sources in real time and use artificial intelligence to analyse environmental data. The initiative is intended to provide authorities with a more detailed picture of where pollution is emerging and help officials respond more quickly to problem areas. The development comes ahead of another winter season in which Delhi traditionally faces severe air-quality challenges.
Traditional pollution monitoring provides information about air-quality levels at particular locations, but identifying the precise sources behind pollution can be considerably more difficult. Delhi’s new approach seeks to combine monitoring systems and analytical tools to identify patterns linked to traffic, construction, dust, industry and other sources. Such technology could allow authorities to move from simply measuring pollution towards identifying where interventions may be required.
The effectiveness of the system will ultimately depend on the quality and coverage of the underlying data, as well as how quickly government agencies act on what the technology identifies. AI can analyse large amounts of information rapidly, but it cannot independently enforce pollution-control rules or eliminate emissions. Delhi’s pollution problem is also regional, with sources outside the capital contributing to overall air quality. The control centre therefore represents a technological addition to the city’s pollution strategy, but its success will depend on coordination between agencies and states, enforcement on the ground and sustained action beyond the most visible pollution episodes.
