India Opens a New Centre to Watch its Trade

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal opened a centre that puts India's export numbers, schemes and approvals on one official screen.

On Friday 16 October 2026, in New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal opened the National Strategic Trade Command Centre. The Commerce Ministry says the centre will watch, study and manage India's trade with other countries. It will use combined data so that decisions rest on evidence, not on scattered files. Ministers and senior officers are meant to see, in one place, how India's exports are doing, which export-promotion schemes are running, which permissions are pending, how fast applications move, and what is happening day to day. An export-promotion scheme is a government programme that gives exporters cheaper loans, tax relief or other help so that Indian goods can compete abroad. A regulatory approval is a permission a firm or a shipment needs before it can leave the country. Until now those facts sat in different offices. The new centre is a screen for officials, not a new cash scheme and not a new tax.

Why it matters

Trade numbers decide orders for factories, shifts for workers and prices in shops. When officials cannot see the full picture, a small exporter waits on a file while a large firm already knows the rule. A single view can, in theory, show who is stuck. It can also show which scheme is paying out and which approval is slow. The same morning, the ministry said goods exports to the United States in April to September were about 51 billion dollars, up from 45.73 billion dollars a year earlier. All of India's exports in September were about 80.75 billion dollars, up 10.99 percent from September 2025. The centre is the tool the ministry says will help officers watch figures like these. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said talks on a trade deal with the United States are moving in the right direction. He did not say the deal is signed. A dashboard does not, by itself, cut a queue at a port or raise a worker's wage.

Key facts

• Piyush Goyal launched the National Strategic Trade Command Centre in New Delhi on 16 October 2026.

• The centre is meant to show export performance, promotion schemes, approvals and processing speed together.

• It does not create a new subsidy or a new tax. It is a tool for ministers and senior officials.

• Goods exports to the United States in April-September were about 51 billion dollars, against 45.73 billion a year earlier.

• India's total exports in September were about 80.75 billion dollars, up 10.99 percent from September 2025.

• The India-US trade talks are still open. The secretary said they are moving the right way, not that they are finished.

What's next

The test is whether the centre changes a decision. A screen full of numbers helps only if someone acts when a scheme fails a small firm, or when an approval sits for months. The ministry has not said that exporters themselves can log in, or that a delayed file will now move faster. Officers will still have to show that the new room is more than a display of figures departments already had. The trade deal with the United States, which would matter more to order books than a dashboard, is a separate negotiation.
