Mokama Bridge Opens, Boosting Bihar Rail Network

A ₹2,400-crore two-line rail bridge over the Ganga at Mokama is now operational.

A new railway bridge over the Ganga at Mokama has entered operation, adding two railway lines and strengthening the connection between northern and southern Bihar. The ₹2,400-crore project is expected to increase rail capacity on one of the state’s important transport corridors and improve connectivity between Bihar and the wider Delhi-Howrah railway network. The bridge is part of a broader effort to expand rail infrastructure and reduce bottlenecks on heavily used routes.

Railway bridges across major rivers can have an outsized economic impact because they remove capacity constraints that cannot easily be solved through timetable changes alone. Additional tracks allow more passenger and freight trains to operate and can reduce delays caused by trains waiting for available paths. For Bihar, improved rail connectivity is particularly important because the state relies heavily on railways for long-distance passenger movement and freight transport.

The project also has a regional development dimension. Better connectivity can reduce travel times, improve access to markets and strengthen links between districts that are separated by the Ganga. It can also help industries move goods more efficiently and make cities along the corridor more attractive for investment. However, infrastructure projects deliver their full value only when they are integrated with roads, logistics facilities and urban transport systems. The Mokama bridge therefore represents an important addition to Bihar’s transport network, but its long-term economic impact will depend on how effectively the additional rail capacity is used and whether surrounding infrastructure can keep pace.
