Russia Damages Kyiv’s Northern Bridge

Russian strikes killed at least six people and damaged Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, snarling traffic for a third day.

Russian attacks have killed at least six people in Ukraine and damaged Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, disrupting traffic in the Ukrainian capital for a third consecutive day. The attacks come as Russia intensifies strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure ahead of another difficult winter. Bridges and other transport links have become increasingly important targets because damage can disrupt the movement of civilians, military equipment and essential supplies.

Kyiv’s geography makes the Dnipro River a critical factor in the city’s transportation network. Bridges connect the eastern and western sides of the capital, meaning damage to even one major crossing can cause large-scale traffic disruption. Russia’s broader campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure has also targeted energy facilities, industrial sites and transport networks, raising concerns that Moscow is attempting to weaken Ukraine’s ability to function during the winter.

Ukraine is simultaneously attempting to strengthen its air defences and conduct long-range attacks against Russian infrastructure. Germany has announced additional military and energy assistance, while European governments remain concerned about the possibility of sustained attacks on Ukraine’s power system. The destruction of bridges therefore forms part of a wider strategic contest over Ukraine’s ability to maintain basic services and military logistics. The attacks also have a psychological dimension: disrupting life in Kyiv demonstrates that even the capital remains vulnerable.
