Supreme Court Demands Stronger Protection for Women

Hearing a suo motu case on Delhi-NCR rapes, the court asked police to focus on prevention and 24-hour monitoring.

The Supreme Court has directed Delhi Police to strengthen preventive measures against crimes targeting women, calling for 24-hour monitoring systems and enhanced security in vulnerable public spaces. The court’s intervention came while hearing a suo motu case concerning recent rape cases in Delhi-NCR. The bench stressed that policing should not focus only on arresting suspects after crimes occur but should also work to prevent offences from happening in the first place.

The court particularly highlighted the safety of women in parks and other areas that may become vulnerable during late hours. It called for continuous monitoring and stronger surveillance, reflecting a broader concern that women should be able to move around Delhi without fear. The court’s observations come during a period when questions about women’s safety have repeatedly generated public anger and political debate. The issue is not limited to policing numbers; it also involves lighting, public transport, CCTV coverage, emergency response, investigation quality and the speed with which complaints are handled.

The emphasis on prevention is significant because criminal justice systems often measure performance through arrests and prosecutions after an offence has already occurred. The Supreme Court is effectively asking authorities to adopt a more proactive model in which vulnerable locations and times are identified before crimes occur. Implementing such a model will require coordination between Delhi Police, municipal agencies, transport authorities and local administrations. The court’s intervention therefore places responsibility beyond individual police stations and towards a broader public-safety system. Whether the measures produce meaningful improvement will depend on sustained monitoring and transparent evaluation rather than temporary deployment around high-profile cases.
