Vietnam Moves to Abolish Death Penalty for Drug Trafficking

Hanoi announced historic legal reforms reducing capital punishment while preserving the sentence for exceptional national crimes.

The National Assembly of Vietnam introduced a landmark judicial reform bill seeking to eliminate capital punishment for specific narcotics offenses. Under the proposed legislation, individuals convicted of smuggling or possessing standard quantities of illicit substances will face maximum sentences of life imprisonment instead of execution. Legal experts view the policy shift as an effort to align Vietnam's criminal justice system with modern international human rights benchmarks. However, the ministry of justice clarified that the death penalty will remain strictly enforceable for high-level cartel leaders and cases involving treason or terrorism. The parliament is expected to vote on the final draft by the end of the year.
