The goal is straightforward: move minerals, particularly copper and cobalt, from Congo's resource-rich interior directly to the Atlantic for export, cutting out the much longer and more expensive routes currently used, many of which involve trucking materials across multiple borders before reaching a port.

The DR Congo alone produces a large share of the world's cobalt supply, making reliable transport infrastructure out of the country a genuinely strategic issue, not just a local economic one.

A faster, more reliable export route, regardless of who finances it, means better prices for their mineral exports and less dependence on any single trading partner or transport route.

Whether the corridor delivers on its promised timeline and cost savings will depend heavily on execution: railway modernisation projects in the region have a long history of delays, cost overruns, and shifting political commitments. But the ambition behind it captures something important about how global competition over critical minerals is playing out in 2026. It is increasingly fought not through diplomatic statements or trade agreements alone, but through the far more physical question of who controls the roads, ports, and railways that move the raw materials the modern economy actually runs on.
